River Wye.

May 8th

The Wye was as low as I have seen it; in fact probably lower. The gauges were useless having been left high and dry for weeks. The water level was probably 10 inches below the bottom of the gauge, and this is only May. Hopefully some rain will come to refresh the river before long.

The water was clear and features of the river that could only be guessed at were now clearly visible. Big rocks that provide lies for salmon, rock ledges that create holding spots for trout and the deep channels that the smaller trout cruised in. And there were plenty of trout in evidence, splashing and sipping at the surface. They appeared to be taking minutiae in the film, though there were a few Mayfly and Yellow May duns in evidence.

I fished a little and watched a great deal; learning more about this wonderful River Wye. The chub were great to observe, cruising in the slack water of the pools, and with so little flow there is a great deal of slow water for the chub. They appear leisurely, cruising and slurping food, but in fact they move a t a fair speed making fishing for them an interesting challenge.
